Can you remember back when you were young, the excitement of getting all new school supplies for the new year? The smell of the fresh wooden #2 pencils? You could almost swear they made you write better!( Or maybe you are like me and #2 pencils remind you of all those standardized tests or penmanship templars we had to write! But I digress.. )The first few weeks, you were set, a whole new bunch of pencils, ready to go… then as the weeks drew on and months passed, your stash of pencils began to dwindle until you reached into your desk and couldn’t find one. So up your hand went to ask the teacher to borrow one, or maybe you leaned over to your best friend sitting beside you and asked for a loaner. Either way, your wish was granted, and maybe after a little lecture from your teacher about being prepared for class, you continued on your day of learning and participating.
Now, imagine instead that at the beginning of that school year, your parents could only afford to get you ONE pencil. That pencil needed to last you all year, from January until the end of term in December. I don’t know about you, but I can't keep track of most of my belongings that long as an adult, let alone being a young student keeping a..single…PENCIL; my keys and cellphone hitting the top of the list of things I will walk around in circles repeating- Has anyone seen my…. Can someone please call my phone!?!.
So what happens when you lose it? Or, have you sharpened it down to the tiniest nub? Because let me tell you, we all know those little hand held twisty pencil sharpeners did nothing more than chew up your pencil while creating tiny little curved pencil shavings that you always dropped on the floor when you attempted to empty it!- I am sure teachers around the world loathe the inventor of those diabolical mess makers! You can't afford a new one. The schools do not provide “loaners”. So you ask your friend with whom you share a desk. Do not worry! They are very helpful and lend you one.. The problem is, they only have one pencil too. So now both of you are passing a single pencil back and forth between you so you can both complete the assignment, take notes or finish the test!
So many of our students are in this scenario. Families struggle to pay the basic school fees and do not have enough money to supply their children with the most simple of school items.. A wooden, #2 pencil.
So to help fulfill this most basic of needs, we have added bulk boxes of pencils to our wishlist. 6 boxes of pencils will allow each student to have 5 pencils for the school year. Which by any standards is still a tight stretch, but it is a start. We have opted against the new-fangled mechanical versions I know my kids preferred in school, because they require a million little boxes of lead refills to maintain, which would only add an additional, more expensive upkeep cost to our project. Amondi has seen the resilience and dedication to education these children have and the care they take of every item they possess. 5 may only be a start, but it will make a huge difference to the support of their education!
So hop on over to our Wishlist page and look around. We have 3 lists of school supplies to donate. Maybe pencils speak to you, maybe its playground balls or pens. Whatever it is, we assure you, these kids will be so appreciative! Our mailing address is PO Box 458 Willow Street, PA 17584 should you have any random ideas for supplies and wish to drop ship them to us for delivery!
Thank you for all of your support in our endeavor. We could not do any of this without amazing people like yourself!
