Oh here we are again, another Wednesday and you know what that means.. WISHLISTS!
So this week we are going to highlight our balls! Umm, that did not come out right, let me try again… This week let's talk about why everyone wants balls… Oh dear, we will skip the introduction and jump right into it.. (Before I get banned from a platform)
One of my favorite elementary school memories ( besides pizza Fridays) was everyone’s favorite time of the day.. RECESS! You all knew what time lessons were to finish and the sweet sweet taste of outdoor freedom was bestowed upon you. You sat and watched the minute hand slowly creep toward your goal and then the announcement. “ Ok, let’s put everything away and get ready for recess!!!
Then, there was a mad dash to the coatroom to grab your jacket and out the door to meet up with your friends. I don’t know about you, but we seemed to have these spurts. We would all play tag incessantly, then all of a sudden we were into 4 square, or jump rope, then it was kickball and back to tag.. Whatever the fascination, it was the best time of the day. Our grades would have huge bins of balls and jump ropes and other outdoor play items that we could borrow to play with, solemnly returning them on the way back inside to our classrooms.
So many games were invented, with roaming and ever changing rules. Some oldies but goodies ( Do they even play dodgeball anymore? ) like soccer ( if you are from the US like me) otherwise known as football to the rest of the world, 4 square, kickball.. All of the fun games. Times may have changed and the country may be different than where you grew up, but at the end of the day, kids are kids no matter the time, location, language or socio-economic standing. They all just want to go outside and play with their friends.
As you can see on our wishlist, we have added several types of balls. Volleyballs, soccer balls, playground balls, netballs ( Ok this one I had to google because I had NO idea what it was and thought maybe it was a generic term for any game involving a ball and a net– nope I was wrong! Think basketball with no backboard. Go check it out, it was very interesting). MPIS has a very small and limited amount of sporting balls for the students to use at recess or even in gym class.
Imagine how exciting recess would have been if you only had a semi-inflated ball to kick around, or worse, no balls at all.
Please check out our WishList and consider donating these education enhancers. We have also added carry bags as their storage is limited. It's just a small closet that also doubles as the makeshift library. ( Insert selfless plug here- Check out our Library donation fund. Not only will it create a real library for these kids, but will add additional space for things like storage!) And I don't know about you, but I think it would be cruel to the poor teacher in-charge of this room having to juggle and manage and try to keep them all from rolling away. And what's a playtoy without air? A sad Frisbee, so we have also added pumps so they can keep the fun rolling! ( See what I did there:)
So for our nostalgic partners and exercise minded folks, consider helping these kids out with some good, old fashioned outdoor recreation!
